Obituary for Bernard Walter Weidenhammer (Okotoks)

Bernard Walter Weidenhammer – 1934-2018
Bernard Walter Weidenhammer was born in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan on November 10, 1934. Bernie is predeceased by his parents Walter and May Weidenhammer (nee Dean). He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joan Weidenhammer (nee Clark), daughters Lori Weidenhammer (Peter Courtemanche - Ullie) and Susan Tomalty (Craig – Liah and Kieran), his brother Harlan (Anne) his sister-in-law, Florence Hummel and numerous beloved nephews and nieces.
Bernie owned and operated the Weidenhammer General Store in Cactus Lake Saskatchewan, which provided gas, groceries and hardware to local farmers. It was a social hub in Cactus Lake—a place where people could come into town and chat while getting the mail or taking their grain to the elevator.
Bernie met Joan when she came to teach in the Cactus Lake area and they were married in Bounty, Saskatchewan on June 13, 1959.
Bernie enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and was happiest having a cup of coffee with friends. He was an amateur ecologist, with a deep regard for the natural prairie he grew up in. He attended countless community events and volunteered for many things including the air cadets, Luseland and Macklin museums, and search and rescue. Bernie was an avid collector and donated many of his treasures to local museums. Most of all Bernie was known for his passion of photography, taking thousands of photos of landscapes and community wedding and events. His local nickname was “Shutterbug Bernie”.
Bernie and Joan were active members of the United Church in Luseland, Saskatchewan and were avid square dancers. For many years Joan and Bernie were the sole full-time residents of Cactus Lake.
4 years ago Bernie and Joan moved to Okotoks, Alberta and enjoyed visiting with the Hummels and the activities at the Heartland seniors’ residence. Bernie passed away peacefully at Tudor Manor in Okotoks.
A celebration of Bernie Weidenhammer’s life will be held on December 8th, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Okotoks United Church, 43 Riverside Drive. His ashes will be interred at a later date in the Luseland Cemetery.
